Future Man

I started the television Future Man a couple weeks ago. After watching the first episode I was not really impressed with it, and thought it was juvenile. I was going to review BoJack Horseman for this week's review, but then I finished watching Future Man. After watching the rest of the season I realized the brilliance of the show. The show is a homage to 80's sci-fi. The show consists of a lot of Terminator and Back to the Future references. A lot of the references really hit perfectly for the show, and a lot of what it accomplishes is because of this.

 Josh Futturman is a loser janitor and spends most of his time playing the video game Biotic Wars. After Josh beats the game the main characters of the game Tiger and Wolf enter his room. They are from the future and our asking for his help in fixing the apocalyptic future. Tiger and Wolf are ruthless human beings, and in their future it is either kill or be killed. They see Josh as the chosen one since he beat the video game. Josh learns that his boss is the reason for the apocalyptic future and is needed to help kill him. Josh has a friendly relationship with his boss so he tries to avoid killing him at all costs.

Josh does not get along with Tiger and Wolf early on in the season. Since they come from different time periods they don't understand the way of doing things. They have little remorse for human life in the past or the present. This goes at odds with Josh as he is not a military man like they are tries at all costs to avoid violence. They soon grow together as a team and grow to like each other. Josh does not have many friends and with Tiger and Wolf he has friends. He also helps them acclimate to his time. As Tiger and Wolf get more acclimated to the present and past the less they become their original selves.

Tiger is in charge of her military group and with Wolf are the sole survivors of their team. She is strong, commanding, and expects the most out of her soldiers. Tiger is much more understanding of Josh than her partner is. Tiger is a bit of a loner as well. When she learns that she can find her ancestors in the past she wants to find them. This compromises the mission and she faces the consequences of it.

My favorite character in the show is Wolf. He is a psycho when we first meet him, and he really acts like what his name is. He has little respect for human life, and wants to murder anyone that gets in his was. Unlike Tiger he really does not get along with Josh for much of the season. He has to respect someone to treat them with respect. The reason I like the character of Wolf so much is that his character has the most development in the season. He grows to be a character that shows his emotions and realizes there is much more to life than killing. Wolf has a pretty good story arc towards the end of the season when he becomes obsessed with the 1980s and its culture. 

Future Man is the reason why you give a show more than one episode before giving up. Yes the show is immature, but the show is clever with its use of references. In particular the references to Back to the Future are perfect. In one specific scene it does Back to the Future in such a R-rated way that I had to stop the show. Yea the scene was gross but it was ballsy to go in the direction that it went in. Future Man is executive produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and it has their finger prints all over it. The story really holds up through the first season as well. With all the time traveling the show could get confusing, but everything is explained perfectly. I have rambled a lot about Future Man. It is warranted though because it was surprisingly good that I would recommend to anyone.
