Atlanta | Season One
Atlanta was one of the most critically acclaimed shows of 2016. Donald Glover won an Emmy for lead actor in a comedy for his portrayal as Earnest "Earn" Marks. The show centers around Marks who is the manager for his up and coming rapper cousin Paper Boi.
As I mentioned Donald Glover portrays our main Character, and he does a phenomenal job in his performance. Earn is really down on his luck when we first meet him in the show. He is broke, lives with his on-again-off-again girlfriend, and have a daughter. Earn really is just trying to give them a good living and everything he does is for them.
Glover is known for his comedic performance in the tv show Community, and he brings this comedic element to Earn. While for the most part Atlanta is a drama it has elements of comedy sprinkled throughout each episode. Glover also plays well off each character he interacts with. You see the relationship trouble he and his girlfriend have in each scene they are in together. Whenever Glover is on screen you are captivated by his performance, and you can tell why he earned an Emmy for his performance.
Earn's rapper cousin is Paper Boi who is played by Brian Tyree Henry. Paper Boi can be a real problem for Earn. Earn's girlfriend does not really trust him, and for good reason. While Paper Boi is aspiring to be a rapper he still deals guns and drugs as a side business. Paper Boi is not always a bad person. He still looks out for his cousin when he gets in trouble. In the final episode of the first season after Earn's jacket gets destroyed he gives him his cut for being manager. He gives him a bonus for all the trouble they have been through.
Brian Tyree Henry is not as known as an actor as Donald Glover, but he stands toe-to-toe with the veteran actor. Henry plays the rough rapper very well. The way he portrays Paper Boi's short tempered is quite startling. You believe that this man could at any moment do something that you would not expect to happen.
Atlanta for me really earned its accomplishments. It was an intriguing take on the story of someone trying to make a name for themselves. It takes in account the racial divide that we have in this country, but it doesn't hit over the head with it. The comedy in the show is well placed, and the cinematography is breathtaking.
